Kristin Wilson, Host: 00:01:09 Hey there, Kristin, from Traveling with Kristin here in welcome to episode 154 of Badass Digital Nomads. I have great news for you today, and that is that interviews are officially back. That's right. I know you like my solo cast too, because I did a poll in the Facebook group and pretty much everyone responded that they like a little bit of both, a little bit of interviews and a little bit of the solo episodes I do where I do a deep dive on a certain topic. So if you would like to vote in that poll, I will drop a link in the show notes. And if you're not in the Badass Digital Nomads Facebook group, then what are you waiting for? Hop over there and join us. Almost 6,000 people strong. So yes, the first interview of the year is complete. Yesterday I spoke with Chase Warrington, who is the head of Remote at Doist, and he's also the host of the About Abroad podcast.
Kristin: 00:02:13 I really think you're going to like this interview with Chase, not only because he's such an experienced nomad and remote worker being the head of remote at a remote company and also hosting his own podcast, but we also talk a lot about his lifestyle in Spain. He and his wife and his dog have been living there and we talk about his transition from digital nomad life to slowmad life. So you'll learn a lot about the lifestyle in Spain, and also we talk about the non-lucrative visa in Spain, the upcoming digital nomad visa in Spain, and what their van life has been like. So I really hope that you enjoy it. I can't wait to share that episode with you and get back to doing more amazing interviews here on Badass Digital Nomads. And this brings me to the topic of today's podcast, which is a podcast I've never done before, but I probably should have.
Kristin: 00:03:13 As you know, we've been publishing once a week on Badass Digital Nomads for over 150 episodes and three years now. And as you heard on the 150th episode anniversary, there have been over, it's now over 220,000 downloads from nearly every country in the world, and with so many tens of thousands of new listeners and downloads every month, there are a lot of you that I haven't spoken with one-on-one and I just want to get to know you and your needs even better because you are. The reason that I started this podcast to begin with, it was to share what I knew about achieving a freedom-filled location, independent lifestyle, and sharing it with everyone. And even though it's been a hard couple of years with the Coronavirus, so many good things have come out of it, especially the great resignation and the global shift to remote work.
Kristin: 00:04:21 And these are all of the things that I was talking about for years to try to spread the word about how a lifestyle that you want to have is possible today, that you don't have to wait any longer. And so that was the vision behind starting Badass Digital Nomads was to bring to you practical how-to guides on how to do different things related to making money online, becoming a digital nomad, living abroad, and also interviewing other people, getting their stories and their experiences about how they made the leap from nine to five to nomad or from a traditional status quo lifestyle, to a location independent one that allows them to live and work and travel everywhere and have control over their time, over how much money they make over when they work over who they spend their time with. Because time is all we have in life, and how you spend your time is how you spend your life.
Kristin: 00:05:31 So every moment that you spend working, traveling, playing, sharing your time with others, it's all very valuable. And there's this connection, very strong connection between the idea of location independence and the practical day-to-day micro and macro freedoms that that comes with. Every single moment of the day is yours when you work for yourself or when you're financially independent and when you live a remote lifestyle. Now, I know some of you have full-time remote jobs, so you still have to sit in some Zoom meetings every day, and there's still some constraints over what you do and how you spend your time. But this ultimate pinnacle of location independence is to really have free on a microscale, on a macro scale over the tiny little moments of your life from when you wake up, uh, what you eat, what time you work, how many hours you work, where you are, how you spend your free time, all the way up to the more, uh, broader macro picture of your long-term career, your impact in the world, the goals that you achieve, your country of residency, your country of citizenship where you pay your taxes.
Kristin: 00:07:03 It really permeates every single part of your life. And there's so many ways for me to approach these topics, to share them with you, and to help you achieve all of them. And so what I wanted to do in today's podcast is ask you four questions that will help me serve you better, because we're gonna be here for a while, <laugh>, there's unlimited things to talk about. You know, I can publish this podcast every week for the rest of my life and never run out of questions that you have, um, topics that we can cover, amazing guests to invite onto the podcast, but I really want to narrow down and focus on the top 10% of things that you care about the most to make sure that every week when you tune in, you're getting the maximum amount of value in the most efficient amount of time.
Kristin: 00:08:09 Another thing that we talked about in a Facebook group poll was what type of podcasts you like? Like how long of podcasts do you listen to? And I had three options, micro podcasts that are five to 15 minutes long, mid-length podcasts from 30 to 60 minutes long, and then longer form podcasts that are an hour or more. And almost everyone chose the second option. So that was really interesting to see because I know that some people have three and four-hour-long interview-style podcast, but it seems that that's definitely not what you guys want. You want more 30 to 60-minute episodes, which is good because that's what I do. And when I do have an extra long interview, as you've noticed, I usually split it into two weeks. Um, because when I listen to long interviews, it can take me multiple days to finish them because I might listen to them in 20 or 30-minute chunks over a few days in a row.
Kristin: 00:09:13 So it sounds like you guys do that too. So this episode is really about getting better at what I do so that it has more of a benefit for you, and also talking about topics that you're interested in, helping you solve problems, creating solutions for things that you need help with. And even though I have quite a bit of experience with podcasting now after publishing more than 150 episodes, I just wanna remind you guys that, you know, I started podcasting not knowing anything about it, not even knowing when I picked up a camera to make my first YouTube video. I didn't know that I needed a separate microphone. I thought, well, the camera has a microphone on it. So that was kind of the basics of where I started, uh, with content creation. And that's where we all start. When we do something new, we start in that awkward phase where we're doing things really badly and over time we get better.
Kristin: 00:10:20 So in your own life, I hope you're always reflecting on your progress and setting micro goals for where you can go next. And so that's what I wanna do here today. Uh, but also connect with you on a deeper level, on a one-on-one level and just get to know you better. So I've created a short Google form that I would like to invite you to fill out. And for everyone who fills out this Google form, you will have the opportunity to leave your name, your phone number, your email address if you would like my team and I to reach out to you. And I'm going to select at least 10 people from everyone who fills out the form for free, one-on-one consultations with me about anything that you wanna talk about. It should only take you a minute or so to fill out the form, and it will really improve the content of the podcast and help direct the specific topics that I talk about for the rest of the year and the years to come.
Kristin: 00:11:28 And the guests that I invite on, the questions we have are, number one, how did you hear about me and how did you find the podcast? Or how did you find my content on YouTube? Number two, what do you like about the content I'm producing? You can comment on the style of the podcast, the topics, anything you want. And then number three, what don't you like about the content I'm producing? And don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings. It's better for me to know what you like and don't like than to not know and just be guessing. And then number four is what is your biggest struggle right now? So this can be related to travel, remote work, living abroad, or really anything. Anything that you've been struggling with, anything that's been on your mind, put it there. And so you can fill out this form anytime.
Kristin: 00:12:23 Anytime you wanna provide feedback, it is definitely welcome. But if you would like to get a chance at getting a free phone call from me, then fill out the form by next Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, and then I will announce the winners the following week. So you have one week to fill out the Google form, share your opinion, share your feedback about the podcast, and get a chance of a one-on-one call with yours truly. I also love getting your reviews, of course, as this is very helpful to me in hearing more about what you like and don't like. Dave just posted a new review on the website so you can review on any podcast platform and then also directly on badassdigitalnomads.com/reviews or just click on reviews at the top. So he says that, um, your podcasts are always excellent. You cover great topics and interviews and give a broad picture of travel and remote work from your own perspective.
Kristin: 00:13:25 You tend to get to the truth about things, which is hard to find very helpful. And then Mike said, Kristin's videos are always filled with helpful educational tips, and she does a great job of keeping them entertaining. Always looking forward to her podcasts. Keep up the good work. So I love getting feedback from you and I wanna hear from you directly. So whether you've left a review or not, please take a moment to go to the show notes and click on the Google form and let me know what you've been struggling the most and how I can best help you. That's what we're here for. That's what this podcast is here for, and that's what our community is here for. Whenever I have a question about something or I want to know more information on something, I always turn to others whether I know them or not, whether it's someone in my personal friend circle or professional network, whether it's our old friend Google, or whether it is somebody on the internet who has experience in that topic.
Kristin: 00:14:29 Learning from others is the best and the most fun way to get through life. You guys know that I read a lot of books and I've been reading more since I've been traveling less and during the pandemic years, and I've been reading older books as well, or books about figures from history, biographies. And I can't help but think how recent it was that as a global population, we really didn't have access to information. Of course, now the challenge is focusing on what's important and kind of blocking out all of the noise. But for the entire history of humanity, I mean, the only way that we could get information was from the people that we physically knew and could interact with. And from the odd, perhaps letter in the mail, once the printing press was invented, we finally had books. But even books, I mean, I've been reading this book about different scientists and philosophers and the middle ages in Europe, and these guys would, and it was guys because women of course, were not allowed to study.
Kristin: 00:15:49 These guys would send books to each other and it would take months to arrive. So a teacher or a scientist or a philosopher would write a book and then send a physical courier, like a person to go deliver it to another country. And it would take that person months to get there, to travel there and to come back. And then that person who received the book would then write a letter in response to the author of the book, send it back to him. I mean, it's just mind boggling to think of how restricted information was and how of course, narrow minded it was because of the monarchy and the aristocracy, and also the church basically having a monopoly over information. But long story short, we have been learning from others ever since there were humans. And that is the best way to learn. And we are so fortunate today with everything that we have, all the technology at our disposable, uh, but most, most importantly, the ability to communicate infinitely beyond borders with this diverse global community.
Kristin: 00:17:05 And there's just not a day that goes by that I am not so grateful for that and for being alive at this time in history and for being able to share knowledge with you and learn from you as well. Each time you ask me a question or you request a topic, it makes me think deeper about it and check my work, verify my sources, and organize the information and the answers in a way that is going to be easy to understand, easy to act upon and implement and be of value to you. And sometimes that's in the form of a story. So we've been experimenting a bit on the podcast this year with less interviews and more solo casts talking about the Ramen God, Yvonne Orkin a couple weeks ago. So let me know if you like that too. Hope you have a great day and see you again next week for the first interview of 2022. My first book, Digital Nomads for Dummies is available for pre-order now wherever books are sold.
